After a long holiday weekend, morale is undoubtedly low the first day back at work. I, for one, share that same lack of enthusiasm today. With that in mind, I offer you a bit of a tribute to the mood and, perhaps, a little pick-me-up. This song is an undeniable classic that comes from a very unlikely source. It’s Peter Frampton’s “Do You Feel Like We Do”. The song… I love. The artist… take him or leave him. For those Frampton fans out there I’m sorry to say this, but Pete is nothing but a babyfaced, one trick pony who is closer to David Cassidy or Leif Garrett on the Rock N Roll spectrum than guitar legends like Jimmy Page or Eric Clapton. Yes, he really exploits that Talk Box, and it can occasionally make for a cool effect, but the extend of his guitar wizardry ends there. The guy has built his career around a single effect and a few cheap licks. Not to mention, his song writing prowess is mediocre at best. If I never hear “Show Me The Way” or “Baby, I Love Your Way” again, I would certainly not miss them. Now, having said that… “Do You Feel Like We Do” is one tune I will always appreciate. The song is well constructed, features a catchy hook, the Talk Box work is very tasteful and the lyrics are far from sappy or sentimental. In fact, the whole premise of the song is about having a hangover, something I can really appreciate after a long hot weekend. The live footage below is not from the famous 1976 double album Frampton Come Alive! but the arrangement is very similar. This 1975 performance is from the now forgotten TV show Midnight Special, hosted by Burt Sugarman on NBC during the 70’s.
